Like an arrhythmic, snarly riposte to the Gorillaz, the Television Personalities have openly embraced their dark places here – years after Daniel Treacy vanished into drug addiction and prison. The sounds emerge non-linearly, with electronic sheens and melodica answered by broken-back, lightly clustery piano, and some roiling tom-tom drum rolls. Treacy blurts out in 'Ex-Girlfriend Club' that he's 'still Danny from the block … Maybe I should get a tattoo and some BLING BLING,' a plea for his cleaved heart and more love. The disjointedness is rampant, staking the band's longstanding territory far to the left of Pavement and the ilk of indie rock/indie pop bands the TPs so obviously influenced. These are post-punk veterans non-pareil, and they deconstruct their own thing obsessively on My Dark Places, even tackling vocal snippets and quotes from the Pistols and Lou Reed against a ridiculously upbeat, lo-fi piano on 'Velvet Underground.' The guitars grind sporadically, and Treacy reclaims his place as an agitated visionary unflinchingly. --Andrew Bartlett
